Practicing Mindfulness with Art

Updated: Oct 10, 2023

Being able to harness and control the constantly active mind is the goal of yoga.

Focusing on a single object can focus and calm the mind. Creating a focus with an object refers to what we call Dristi in yoga. Dristi, or the gaze is a tool we use to settle the nervous system and find calm within.

Do this exercise on your own or in groups.

Step 1)

  • Sit on your mat. Place an object, such as a beautiful flower or shell, in front of you to look at.

Step 2)

  • Stare at the object intently for 30 seconds.

Step 3)

  • Close your eyes and try to see the object in your mind. Repeat 4-10 times.

Step 4)

  • Draw the object from memory

This exercise helps individuals become more observant and increases awareness.
